Mass Brewers Guild says cheers to first year of mobile passport

It’s becoming more and more common to pair a good beer with a cell phone today. Brewers guilds across the country have taken notice and continue to adapt by moving paper brewery maps to the digital age.

In the first year of its new mobile passport app, the Mass Brewers Guild (MBG) saw more than 8,500 users log nearly 71,000 brewery check-ins.

“We are thrilled with the continued excitement and downloads of our new mobile passport program,” said the MBG’s executive director, Katie Stinchon. “We can update the brewery list in realtime as tap rooms pop up all over the state, and its incredible to watch the leaderboard grow as people travel to taste all the that the Massachusetts craft beer scene has to offer.”

Of these thousands of users, only 20 have checked into more than 100 breweries. That makes them eligible to win a three-course beer dinner with Boston Beer Co.’s Jim Koch, Harpoon Brewing’s Dan Kenary, and Night Shift Brewing’s Rob Burns. Five winners will be drawn on Sept. 28.

Users who began their virtual journeys when the app launched this time last year, will soon see their passports “reset.” Each year, stamps previously earned will be archived to encourage more and more exploring of the Bay State’s breweries.

Previous stamps and badges will still be available for bragging rights, but you’ll be able to get a fresh stamp when visiting breweries you’ve previously checked into.

The 10 most checked-in breweries are:

1. Trillium Brewing Co. – Canton (530 check-ins)
1. Night Shift Brewing (530 check-ins)
3. Jack’s Abby Brewing (467 check-ins)
4. Wormtown Brewery (433 check-ins)
5. Castle Island Brewing (430 check-ins)
6. Tree House Brewing Co. (429 check-ins)
7. Bone Up Brewing Co. (410 check-ins)
8. Medusa Brewing Co. (371 check-ins)
9. Springdale Beer (371 check-ins)
10. Widowmaker Brewing (347 check-ins)
